The winter masterpiece exhibition Pierre Bonnard, opening at the National Gallery of Victoria on June 9, includes works from every stage of the artist’s rich and varied career – through his paintings, posters and sketches.
It would shape much of the early work of the painter described by Henri Matisse as “the greatest of us all”.īonnard, circa 1899, when he would have been 32 years old. He moved to Paris in 1888 at the age of 21, and over the next 38 years, when in the city, he didn’t stray far from that tight geographic corridor with its narrow cobbled streets, wide boulevards and gritty, often sleazy characteristics. With a few diversions, it also takes in almost all the areas where artist Pierre Bonnard studied, lived and worked in the French capital. It’s about 3.3 kilometres between the two points and a simple walk. Bonnard used to enjoy walking the area’s hilly streets. The metropolis lies a steep 95 metres below and, on a clear day, it’s easy to draw an imaginary line to the shining gold tip of the Luxor Obelisk in Place de la Concorde.
